Efficient or otherwise stage management can make or break
a gig or event, particularly a multi band / performer event.
Good event organisation will have resulted in schedules
and methods being put in place to ensure smooth running
of the stage and backstage area and quick, and as seamless
as possible, changeover times between the varying acts.
However the best planning in the world will all count for
nothing if the stage area is not run in an effective way.
Aside from the obvious aspects of the stage manager's role
such as ensuring the different bands / performers are ready
to go on stage at the correct times, the jobs of the stage
manager cover any eventuality, hopefully anyway.
Prior to the show there are issues concerned with health
and safety, stage crew, lighting and sound technicians and
crew as well as acting as a link between the artist and
everyone else. These are all pertinent during the actual
show as well - a plan b is always a good thing to have in
mind and on occasion, a plan z as well! Unexpected events
happen that are out of the control of everyone and normally
no one's fault and ability to think on your feet is about
as important as technical know how.
Having all this taken care of by an experienced stage manager
can be worth its weight in gold and make the difference
between a successful event and a disastrous one. We have
stage managed a variety of events from Battle of the Bands
competitions to outdoor festivals.
Below is a community festival in Manchester being set up
and the finished version in action.
